Why Do We Have Day and Night?

Have you ever wondered why the sky is bright when you wake up, but dark when you are ready for bed? Day and night happen because Earth is always spinning. As our planet turns, different places take turns facing the Sun.

Earth Spins Like a Giant Top

Earth is not standing still in space. It spins around an imaginary line called its axis. You can picture the axis as a stick passing through the planet from the North Pole to the South Pole, although there is no real stick inside Earth. The planet turns smoothly around this line.

The Sun is a star that gives off light and heat in every direction. Earth is round, so sunlight can illuminate only about half of the planet at one time. The bright half is experiencing day. The dark half is experiencing night.

Imagine shining a flashlight on a ball in a dim room. The side of the ball facing the flashlight is bright, while the opposite side is shadowed. Earth and the Sun work in a similar way. The edge between the light half and the dark half is sometimes called the day-night boundary.

Sunrise, Sunset, and Twilight

Sunrise happens when a place turns far enough toward the Sun for sunlight to reach it. Sunset happens when that place turns away from the Sun. Because Earth rotates west to east, the Sun appears to rise in the east and move across the sky toward the west.

The sky is not always instantly bright at sunrise or instantly black at sunset. A short period of softer light can happen before sunrise and after sunset. This is called twilight. Clouds, mountains, buildings, and the shape of the landscape can change what a sunrise or sunset looks like. The colors can also vary because sunlight travels through the atmosphere and interacts with tiny particles and air molecules.

Why Do Some Places Have Longer Days?

Day and night are caused by Earth’s rotation, but the length of daylight changes during the year because Earth’s axis is tilted. As Earth travels around the Sun, this tilt causes one hemisphere to lean more toward the Sun for part of the year and then away from it later.

When your hemisphere leans toward the Sun, it receives more hours of daylight and experiences summer. When it leans away, it has fewer daylight hours and experiences winter. The other hemisphere has the opposite season.

Near the equator, day and night stay fairly close to equal length throughout the year. Near the North and South Poles, the changes can be much more dramatic. Some polar regions can have daylight for many weeks or months, followed by a long period of darkness. These unusual patterns still come from Earth’s tilt and rotation.

Because Earth is round and constantly turning, different places enter daylight at different times. To keep clocks organized, people divide the world into time zones. A time zone is a region where clocks usually show the same local time. When it is morning in one place, it may be afternoon, evening, or night somewhere else.

Animals respond to day and night in many different ways. Some birds are active during daylight, while many owls and bats are most active at night. Plants also respond to light and darkness. People use daylight for school, work, travel, and outdoor activities, while nighttime gives the sky a chance to reveal stars that are usually hidden by bright sunlight.
